"I was introduced to Quadrabloc by Brad Worthington, MD. We were discussing anesthesia techniques to manage post surgical pain in spine surgery patients. Our discussion covered non-pharmaceutical approaches to pain management, including the use of magnets. I am a board certified anesthesiologist and have additional training in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. I remain open to alternative modalities that have a scientific basis for efficacy. Many of the modalities I try myself before offering these options to my patients. I find Quadrabloc therapy to be a useful adjunct in the treatment of pain. 

My practice also encompasses remote and wilderness medicine. The ideal solution for pain management in the wilderness is a non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical, portable, easily applied and easily removable modality. I find that the Quadrabloc system works quite well for this. I don't have to worry about narcotic side effects or infection from more invasive techniques. I don't need to carry heavy bags with extensive medical equipment. The magnets are small and easily fit into a medical bag. The individual discs are great for small, localized injuries and pain. The pad facilitates application to larger areas and is easily positioned with the belt. There are limitations, as with any treatment. Severe pain and injury require more intervention.

I find in general that this system can make a difference in the outdoor adventurer whose pain is limiting the enjoyment of their experience. By alleviating some of their discomfort, they are more likely to focus less on their pain and experience more pleasure from their outdoor exertions. In the worst-case scenario, partial relief of pain may, in some cases, aid an individual to have enough mobility to assist in their ambulation from a remote area to an area where they can be evacuated to a higher level of care."

We spend a great deal of time in our conversations with healthcare professionals and patients differentiating Quadrabloc from other forms of treatment for pain and discomfort.  Recently, our audience has begun to ask us how Quadrabloc differs from other marketed magnets.  Some of the questions include-

"Are all magnets the same?"
"What makes Quadrabloc unique?"

"How does Quadrabloc work differently than other magnets for pain relief?"

These are fair questions and they point us to advantages unique to Quadrabloc.  But, first things first, it is important to understand that Quadrabloc is not a single magnet.  Instead, each Quadrabloc is composed of four (4) magnets arranged in an optimal array to produce the desired effect on sensory nerves. 

So, what makes Quadrabloc one-of-a-kind in the field of magnets for relieving pain? 

Quadrabloc, and its predecessor Magnabloc, is differentiated by its

1. patented quadrapolar design,
2. unique magnetic steep field gradient, and
3. demonstrated effect on sensory nerves.

Quadrabloc is differentiated by its unique patented design.

Quadrabloc, as its name suggest, is composed of four (4) cylindrical neuromagnets arranged in a specific, patented geometry in alternating polarity.  Competing magnets will use a single-pole or bi-polar (2) array.

And, why is the design important? 

Quadrabloc’s patented design produces a unique steep gradient magnetic field.

The array of four (4) neuromagnets produces a steep gradient field that predictably and reversibly blocks the communication of a pain signal.  The gradient field produced by Quadrabloc is the result of aligning the neuromagnets in an optimized array of four magnets with alternating polarity. This array is the result of significant peer-reviewed research designed to determine the optimal array (or alignment) of magnets to produce the desired effect.  The picture below presents a plastic model of the actual induction field produced by Quadrabloc and reflects the tissue penetration of greater than one (1) inch observed with Quadrabloc.

And, why is the steep field gradient important?

The steep field gradient created by Quadrabloc delivers the desired biological response –reversible blocking of the communication of pain to the central nervous system. 

Sensory nerve blockade, expressed as a reduction in the amount and intensity of electrical pain signals, has been found to be most effectively inhibited by the alternating quadrapolar static steep magnetic field gradient unique to Quadrabloc.  McLean, et al., and other independent multidisciplinary researchers and research groups at Vanderbilt University Medical Center successfully developed a method to study the biological effects of static magnetic fields. These studies convincingly demonstrate the quadrapolar magnetic array to be the optimal design necessary to block the transmission of pain ignited by sensory nerve fibers.

Quadrabloc works by reducing the firing rate of pain signals and the inflammatory response generated by painful stimulation. When in pain, we know where it hurts. With Quadrabloc, the user can simply place Quadrabloc where it hurts. With Quadrabloc appropriately positioned, the perception of pain, and the inflammatory response to pain, is diminished.  And, finally, Quadrabloc is described as “reversible” because removing Quadrabloc from the body site terminates its effect.  Quadrabloc is sold as a set of four neuromagnets, as a Pad with five (5) Quadrabloc neuromagnets, and as a back belt with seven (7) neuromagnets.

Pain can sometimes greet you as an unexpected, unpleasant surprise.  This was the case with me.  One Sunday afternoon, I had the pleasure of co-hosting a reunion of 45 friends.  We had known each other for over 30 years and I was very much looking forward to catching up with old friends. And, catch up we did!  It was a great day.  Still, I recall standing (without sitting), in heels, on a ceramic tile floor for 5 hours greeting, hugging, catching up and reminiscing about the “old days”.  Ladies, perhaps you have been there?  On this day, the excitement had carried me through the day, but unfortunately not beyond the day.

The following morning, I struggled to get out of bed.  I was stiff and my hips and my back was in pain.   Thinking the pain would subside through the course of the day, I went about my normal activity.  Instead, the pain persisted…frustratingly persisted.   Since I can’t take over-the-counter pain relievers, I just had to “grin and bear it”, or so I thought.  After the third day, the pain was so intense and I was having such difficulty walking, that I called to see how soon I could see my doctor.  The receptionist said unfortunately the first available time was 5 days later.  I took the appointment.

Knowing I had reached my limit for pain, I called a friend who has had a long-time “personal relationship” with Quadrabloc.  In the past, he had tried to get me to wear a Quadrabloc back belt when I was having back pain.  Still, I always graciously declined the offer.  I was not yet convinced of the therapeutic value of “magnets” or neuromagnets, as he described Quadrabloc. This time, in a desperate tone, I told him “I need help and I need it right now!”  He immediately brought me his Quadrabloc back belt and gave me instruction on the appropriate use and placement.  I remained skeptical.  Still, the pain was so severe that I would was very willing to try Quadrabloc.

WOW!  What a surprise!  Within a short period of time, the pain subsided to a numb ache.  After wearing the Quadrabloc belt for 3 days, I called and cancelled my doctor’s appointment, and continued wearing the belt.  Two days later, I called my friend and told him the pain had “shifted” to a lower spot. He told me how to reposition the belt to get relief.   Again, it worked! Where there was “little faith” (if any at all, to be honest), I began to have a great affection for this “Miracle Belt”.  And, after a few more days, I was able to remove the belt completely!

I now have my own Quadrabloc belt as well as a Quadrabloc pad.  A few weeks ago, I woke up with a pain in my arm located between the elbow and the wrist.  Thinking I had just slept on it during the night, I ignored the discomfort.  After the second day of persistent pain, I had an “Aha” moment.  I remembered the pad that I have and thought “why not try it?”  I secured the pad around my arm and wore it for about four hours.  Again, the pain disappeared!

If I get overly tired, my lower back will begin to ache.  Now, I don’t hesitate to put on the belt and the pain slips away after a few short minutes.  And, another nice thing I like about it  is that you can wear the belt under or  outside of your clothes, either way is comfortable and doesn’t look unsightly!

Needless to say, where there was once doubt, I can no longer imagine life without Quadrabloc as part of my daily life (if needed).  It relieves the pain without the expense and time involved of trying to see a doctor.  And, in my case, no pain relievers are required!  I strongly recommend Quadrabloc for anyone who is experiencing pain.

"I have had problems with temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) in my jaw for several years. One of the best things about what we do, is hearing from our customers who have found such great results when nothing else helped! We just got this wonderful note from a Nurse, who like many, has severe, work related, pain. Read what she had to say about her Quadrabloc... 

"My name is Heather and I am a fulltime Registered Nurse. I have worked for 16 years in a variety of different settings in the field of Nursing. Most notably Neurology and Neurological ICU. In these areas of advanced patient care I damaged my back. After lifting, pushing, pulling and tugging those in need of help, my lower back has been ravaged. For years I have had pain that has ranged from bearable to terrible chronic everyday pain. Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation devices, TENS devices, stimulate low threshold peripheral nerves that transmit position and touch signals. Questions on QuadraBloc with Dr. Brad

Question: How did you learn about QuadraBloc?

In 1988, I was introduced to the predecessor to QuadraBloc by one of my patients. The patient called to tell me he had found a new way to take care of his chronic back pain that was much simpler, safer, and easier. He insisted that I come to his office to meet the inventor and see for myself.

When I arrived at the patient’s office, I witnessed several older gentlemen moving about like they were warming up for an athletic event. They also had these checker sized discs taped to specific locations where they had been feeling significant pain. They were all smiles. My patient was the co-founder of a national chain of hospitals and he was joined in his elation by the other co-founder. I took note.

After seeing several patients who “claimed” to have tremendous results using “the magnets”, I was inclined to chalk the results up to placebo. Shortly thereafter, I would experience the effect of neuromagnetic technology firsthand due to a disc rupture in my lumbar region.  I was able to avoid surgery and quickly became a believer. I thought, “These quadrapolar magnets have the potential to be life changing.”  But how did these magnetic discs work? Next stop Vanderbilt University and the effort to bring the scientific method to the magnets.  We went on to establish the Vanderbilt Center for Pain Research and Neuromagnetic and the Division of Neuromagnetics at Vanderbilt University for the purpose of studying the impact of alternating quadrapolar magnets on reducing pain.  It was here that I began to learn a great deal about QuadraBloc and its impact on the lives of a broad cross-section of pain patients.

We would like to take a moment to introduce you to our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Brad Worthington.  Dr. Brad has an extensive history with the development of inpatient and outpatient fast-tracking techniques to minimize patient length of stay, improve postoperative outcomes and maximize the patient experience.

Dr. Brad’s career in medicine began at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship, Anesthesiology Residency, and Cardiac Fellowship at HUP, then completed a Pediatric Anesthesia and Critical Care Fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with specific interest in pediatric cardiovascular anesthesia.  After his training in Philadelphia he moved to Nashville, Tennessee and joined Anesthesia Consultants of Nashville (“ACN”). The group covered several Nashville hospitals including, St. Thomas, Centennial Medical Center, and Baptist Hospital as well as a variety of ambulatory surgical facilities. His clinical practice focused on adult cardiothoracic and neurosurgical procedures and the development of acute and chronic pain management services for the group. It was during this time that Dr. Worthington also served as an Associate Clinical Professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for Anesthesiology and Neurology.  He was also as the Medical Director for the Vanderbilt Center for Pain Research and Neuromagnetics (1998-2000), where his work supported focused on the clinical efficacy of alternating, quadrapolar magnets, the foundation for QuadraBloc. Literally hundreds of patients traveled to Vanderbilt from across the US and the world to participate in an IRB approved clinical trial.

January 5, 1993 began as a very typical day for David Buck.  David, an extreme skier, was once again above the tree line at the top of Mount Baldy at an altitude greater than 9,000 feet and staring down the familiar path that would take him to the bottom.  For David, this is his normal. He finds peace in attacking life with a bold, self-confident belief that he manages to wrap in a gentle spirit characterized by a warm, engaging smile.

Near immediately after beginning his trek down the mountain, David noticed a young man on a snow board traveling down the mountain behind him.  David understood that the combination of the conditions on this day and the presence of the snow boarder could create an avalanche behind him.  Still, for David, this was no cause for alarm.  This was not unusual.  He had always enjoyed the opportunity to outrun an avalanche.  This day might offer a similar rush, a rush down the mountain to beat an imposing avalanche.

Then, it happened.  Except, this time the avalanche was greater than David could have imagined.  How could a snow boarder create such a wall of snow?  David, an instinctive and skilled skier, immediately located a tree and was able to grab a limb, a limb he hoped would serve as the mountain’s life preserver.  The limb’s integrity would be compromised in only a matter of seconds.  David would fall 150 feet and tumble another 150 feet down the side of Mount Baldy.

For David, this became one of those moments when life is lived in slow-motion and time seems to stand still.  He recalls praying for his son as he was falling uncontrollably down the side of the mountain.  He recalls seeing a spiral of lights, an out-of-body experience, that will be forever framed in his mind. During his fall, David also recalled the teaching of legendary Grand Master Kim Jin Pal who had trained David in Hapkido, a form of Tae Kwon Do where David had earned a black belt.  The Grand Master had taught David a series of body rolls that could be used to protect internal organs when competing in martial arts.  As his body changed direction at the end of the 150 feet fall and he started to tumble, David mustered the strength to deploy the body rolls taught to him by the Grand Master. 

“He is not going to make it.”

The fall was over.  The tumbling had ended.  His body was still.  David knew he was injured badly.  He could not move his lower extremities.  Still, miraculously, he was alive.  David yelled to a friend, “Call the helicopter!”  In a matter of minutes, the helicopter arrived and the process of lifting David from Mount Baldy began.  The emergency medical professionals worked quickly.  David was transitioned to the trauma unit of San Bernandino Medical Center (SBMC).  The transition from the mountain to the trauma center took only one hour.  During the transition, David could overhear voices, “He is not going to make it.”  From this point forward, David would now need to become a mountain climber, applying his resilience, his passion, and his faith to regain his life. 

David stayed a full three months of care in rehabilitation centers, including stays at renown facilities Saint Jude’s and Rancho Los Amigos.  At the close of three months, David would discharge himself from rehabilitation so that he could take a more active role in his recovery.  He had also discovered that the TENS units the doctors had attempted to treat him with were unsuccessful in reducing his pain.  It was during this time that he began researching articles focused on the regeneration of nerve tissue.  His research turned him towards magnetic therapy.  Still, research and advancing his understanding was not enough.  David needed a solution. He wanted to step away from his reliance on opiates, which managed to help him get through the day.  David recognized that opiates could send him down another slippery slope…towards exclusive reliance on the pain medications and ultimately towards addiction. 

Rehabilitation, recovery and the search for drug-free pain relief.

The active role David assumed in his recovery resulted in a personalized product that he built for himself.  The product took the form of a harness with bi-polar magnets distributed equally on each side of his spine.  His pain relief was immediate. It did not go unnoticed…by David or the doctors overseeing his recovery at San Bernardino Medical Center. The doctors at SBMC could not believe his reported pain relief or the pace of his healing.  The fusion of his bone was progressing at an unexpected rate.  In treating himself, David was setting the foundation for a life’s work in treating others seeking pain relief.

With his health improving, this extreme skier was also motivated to return to playing with his kids.  Incredibly, in the same year he was injured, he was back on the slopes in an adaptive mono-ski.  He also enrolled in a weight lifting class at Irvine Valley College, a class designed for individuals with spinal cord injuries.  And, at the encouragement of his mother, who enjoyed watching David play tennis during his time in high school, David began playing wheelchair tennis.  Tennis would prove to be an important contributor to helping David express his love for people and his competitive spirit.

Another fall.

In 2009, David would suffer a second accident.  This time David would fall 14’ after his elevator malfunctioned in his home.  His chair buffered his impact, still he suffered a second spinal cord injury in his lower back and neck. The result was additional paralysis from his cervical fractures. For three months, David was required to lay flat on his back.  This was followed by another three months of rehabilitation as in incomplete quadriplegic.  Once again, magnetic therapy became his “go to” source for managing pain and accelerating his recovery.

After dedicating six months to rehabilitation following his second injury, David returned to tennis.  With his kids older, David could dedicate more attention to the game.  As you would expect, David attacked tennis with the intensity he attacks the slopes.  David would rise to the number 9 ranked wheelchair tennis player in the world.  He would also go on to participate in the double master series which is limited to the top four doubles teams in the world. 

The path to Quadrabloc.

So, what about that foundation in medical products that David established with the harness and the bi-polar magnets?  Following his first accident, David started a durable medical equipment company dedicated to helping those with spinal cord injury.  During this time, he continued to research the role of magnets in pain relief and tissue regeneration. 

In the late 90s, his work led him to Vanderbilt University where a physician by the name of Dr. Brad Worthington was overseeing the university’s research program dedicated to quadrapolar magnets and their role in pain management.  The relationship ultimately led David to developing the portfolio products for Magnabloc, the first generation quadrapolar neuromagnet.  Dr. Worthington and David would continue to work together following David’s second accident in 2009 to further advance the work in quadrapolar neuromagnets.  The result is Quadrabloc, the advanced quadrapolar neuromagnet launched to the public earlier this year.  And, if you were able to watch closely as David climbed the world ranking charts in wheelchair tennis, you could see that David was using the prototype for Quadrabloc to ward off pain during his matches.  Quadrabloc was always his “playing partner” and was always placed discreetly between his lower back and wheelchair seat.
